The Big Green Egg Minimax is the smallest of the Big Green Eggs, but rest assured that it will still deliver you all of the cooking versatility and the depth of wood fired flavours of its three bigger brothers, but with the distinct advantage of being portable, or more realistically, transportable. Hence its two robust integrated carrying handles. With most of the weight being made up of NASA grade ceramics the MiniMax weighs in at 35kg (that's 5 st 7lb approx) so it will take two people, one each side, to carry it safely. Its stocky compact size means that it will easily fit on a table top for a stable and convenient cooking height, provided the surface is non-combustible or at the very least it is protected with a fireproof barrier such as a 50mm (2”) concrete pavement slab. Alternatively Big Green Egg also offer an optional 600mm (24") high foldable portable metal stand to safely secure the MiniMax at a good cooking height.
As with all Big Green Eggs when you own a MiniMax you soon realise that it's capable of far more than your basic barbecue with its big choice of accessories that will widen your cooking styles and experience. You'll also have the worldwide best-in-class customer support of Big Green Egg as well as being able to access a huge community of enthusiasts who produce their own 'how-to' recipe videos on YouTube, including many produced by our own Eggsperts at The Stove Yard. We're all big Big Green Egg fans here so when you visit us you'll be talking to people who really understand the benefits of Egg ownership. Better still Big Green Eggs have been tried and tested by some of the world's leading chefs including our own Tom Kerridge.
Like barbecues the world over the Big Green Egg MiniMax uses charcoal, but that's really where the similarity ends. The sheer weight of the heavy duty spring-balanced MiniMax ceramic lid, which features a superior refractory felt gasket makes an airtight connection with the gasket on the rim of the ceramic base. This means that temperatures inside can be precisely controlled and monitored with the integrated Tel-tru thermometer and by managing the combustion air supply to the charcoal with the cast iron regulator on the Egg top and the ash door at the base. This also makes it faster and easier to get the fire started than regular barbecues.
Once fired up the MiniMax's thick ceramic body and lid will provide excellent insulation to ensure that the desired grill temperature remains constant and food will cook uniformly. This tightly sealed cooking environment also ensures that meats retain their flavoursome juices which are combined with the delicious smoky wood tastes to create really succulent dishes, virtually impossible to create on traditional barbecues.
With the MinMax you can be quickly cooking most food within about 12 minutes with the maximum oven temperature of around 400ºC usually being reached within about 20 minutes. The MiniMax is also incredibly miserly with it's fuel consumption too, exactly because of its exceptional air control. When you've finished cooking you can simply completely close both air controls to extinguish the fire and then reuse the charcoal next time you fire up.
There are no cold corners with the MiniMax's 330mm (13" approx) diameter stainless steel grill which will evenly cook four burgers, two large steaks, one rack of ribs, a whole chicken or even a large joint of meat which can also be cooked low and slow. The MiniMax is great for searing or cooking 'dirty' directly on top of high quality clean charcoal, such as Big Green Egg's own. By adding the ‘ConvEGGtor’ plate (we hate the name!), which comes as standard with your MiniMax, you can then easily turn it into a rudimentary convector oven to enable you to cook with indirect heat which will provide you with even more inventive dishes to cook. You can easily swop between the grill and convector plate, which is also true for all of the many MiniMax's accessories.
As we've already said the MiniMax is so much more than a barbecue. With a MiniMax, and some additional optional accessories such as the pizza baking stone, you'll be able to grill directly and indirectly, roast, bake, smoke, steam, fry, cook low and slow, in a pan or plancha style to easily produce a huge variety of restaurant quality dishes – besides the regular bangers and burgers of course.
If you're looking to take your outdoor cooking to another level or to take your outdoor cooker with you then there's no better place to start than with the Big Green Egg MiniMax.
