How to Care for Your Cast Iron Dutch Oven

With its superior heat retention and durability, the Big Green Egg Cast Iron Dutch Oven is built to last for generations. Proper care, seasoning, and cleaning will ensure it performs beautifully for years to come.

What is Seasoning?

Seasoning is the process of building a natural non-stick surface by coating the pan with layers of fat. Over time, this improves the pan’s performance and enhances the flavours of your dishes.

How to Season
  1. Pour a small amount of cooking oil (sunflower or rapeseed recommended) into the pan.
  2. Wipe the oil evenly across the interior with a cloth or paper towel.
  3. Place in an oven or Big Green Egg at 200°C for 1 hour.
  4. Turn off the heat and let the pan cool completely before removing.

For a quicker method, heat a thin layer of oil on the stovetop until it smokes, then let cool. Repeat two more times for best results.

Cleaning Tips
  • Clean with hot water and a soft sponge; avoid detergents or dishwashers as they can strip the seasoning.
  • Dry thoroughly to prevent rust. You can dry it on low heat after washing for extra protection.
  • Remove any rust by scrubbing, washing, drying, and re-seasoning.

Debris is easiest to remove when the pan is still warm. For stubborn spots, use a gentle scrubber and re-season after cleaning.

Pro Tip

Your Dutch oven may develop unique colours and patterns over time – this is perfectly normal and adds character to your cookware!
